Q&A with Maddy:

What attracted you to bike racing?

“I got started with the help of my dad who surprised me with my first ever road bike when I expressed interest in joining the UCLA Triathlon team. I ended up not sticking with the triathlon team for long (swimming was the death of that pursuit), but once I found the UCLA cycling club a year later, I was hooked on bikes.”

What do you consider your strengths in cycling?

“I’m an all-around, pursuit style rider with a good punch on steep, short climbs. I love being aggressive and getting in breakaways.”

What inspires you?

“My teammates, coach, family, and friends for always believing in me and wanting to see me at my best.”

What are your goals?

“To have fun training and racing my bike with my team. To contribute to the team’s success in whatever capacity I can.”

What’s your superpower?

“I have a knack for finding written typos.”

Any dream race you’d like to do?

“Tour de France Femmes”

Favorite food? Favorite treat?

“Favorite food is Thai food. Favorite treat is brownies.”

Craziest thing you’ve ever done?

“Volcano boarding in Nicaragua”

Any advice to younger girls who want to get into bike racing?

“If you want to give bike racing a try but are intimidated because of the male dominated nature of the sport, reach out to other female cyclists. We all want more women in the sport, and want to break down the barriers to entry to encourage more to join. Don’t be afraid to ask any question you have.”
